  13.     This item might be old news to some people but I find the test results
  14. informative enough.  On the Oct 24/95 issue of PC MAGAZINE, the top selling
  15. 28800 kbps modem brands (at this month) were tested and their performance rated.
  16. The modems tested were AT&T DataPort Express 28.8, Best Data SmartOne 2834FX,
  17. Cardinal 28.8 External Fax, Hayes Accura 288 V.34/V.FC + Fax, Motorola Power
  18. 28.8 Data/Fax, Multi-tech Multimodem MT2834ZDX, Practical Peripherals Class 288
  19. MiniTower II V.34, SupraFAXModem 288, U.S. Robotics Sportster 28.8 V.34
  20. Faxmodem, and Zoom/FaxModem V.34X.
  21.     The modems were rated not only on transer speeds but also on six  categories
  22. which are important to home users (which people tend to  overlook when
  23. considerng a modem to purchase): setup, design, software, performance, service
  24. and reliability, and overall value.
  25.     Setup - a modem should provide an easy-to-understand setup guide, install
  26. effortlessly, and connect with the on-line services on the first try.
  27.     Design - includes placement and durability of switches and buttons, status
  28. indicators, and overall size and sturdiness of teh modem.
  29.     Software - a modem had to provide startup kits for the major online services
  30. such as AOL, Compuserv, Prodigy, as well as beeter than average communication
  31. and fax software, including net browser, special function software.
  32.     Service and reliability - modem's warranty and the vendor's technical support
  33. policy (toll-free call, and extended technical support hour).
  34.     Performance - speed and reliability in the ff operations: fax, telephone-network
  35. simulation, throughputs vs. file type transfers.
  36.     Overall value - encompasses  all of the above, weighed against the price of the
  37. modem.

  52. Benchmark Test Results.
  53.     The computer setup used for testing was a Dell 486/33 ME with a Hayes dual-port
  54. ESP Board (NS 16550 UART). For throughput and telephone-network simulation
  55. tests, the software used was XFR (Satchell Evaluations),  and for the fax test
  56. the software used was WinfaxPro.

  58. 1. Throughput vs. file type.  Five data type (highly, moderately, and slightly
  59. compressible graphics, incompressible file, and combination file)   were
  60. transferred unidirectionally as well as bidirectionally to test for
  61. effectiveness of  V.42 error correction, V.42bis compression, framing overhead,
  62. and dictionary.

  77. error correction algorithm,  signal converter, and firmware in handling
  78. simulated  line conditions.  168 line conditions were used which are most likely
  79. to occur in  PSTNs.

  108.     Hayes Acura and Practical Class modems could not complete the fax test because
  109. of incompatibility of  Rockwell chipset used.  Using version 1.3 of the code
  110. fixes the problem.
